Mae Jemison was born in 1956, grew up in Chicago never doubting that she would venture into the stars and has ventured into our history books as well as the first African-American female astronaut.
Dr. Jemison believes in the importance of empowerment, that we all have important contributions to make and encourages taking the risks needed to do so. She established the Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence which supports numerous programs including a four-week residential science camp to help students and teachers connect science to their daily lives and society. Together, students from around the world, with a teacher and college intern, work in teams to create solutions to contemporary global dilemmas. |
