betye saar
assemblage artist

Born in 1926, BETYE SAAR continues to create assemblage art at the age of 94.  A collector of things, Saar scours flea markets collecting items to use in her art.  Her mixed-media work has used symbolism to share visual stories; a ship will represent a slave ship, clocks symbolize time and the inclusion of blackbirds symbolizes segregation, discrimination and racial hatred.
