flying critters
what is your favorite winged creature?

waiting for wings - video book
Dragonflies or dragons?  Butterflies or bumblebees?  Fantastical flying beasties are out and about!  Use this project as a spring board to start your imagination soaring; create your own version that takes the idea to new heights!

materials:
2 drinking straws ** 2 different diameters
colored pencils or markers
scissors & tape
cardstock paper (a paper plate will work in a pinch)

Download the file below and print it onto a heavyweight paper such as cardstock and gather your project materials.

Step One:  Using the template, decorate your butterfly colored pencils, markers or crayons.  When you are finished cut out your butterfly following the solid outside line.
Step Two:  Turn over the paper; color in the center body and antenna as shown (right). 
Step Three:  Fold the butterfly in half, with the colored wings facing inside.  Next, fold the wing back over the body. Turn over and repeat with the 2nd wing.  
Now when you hold the butterfly by pinching the body sections together the wings will lay flat.
Step Four:  Cut 2 small slits (mine are 5/8") directly across from each other in the smaller diameter straw. 
Next, cut 2 slits in the larger diameter straw (mine are 2 1/2") directly across from one another.
Step Five:  Watch the video for instructions to complete the final step.

Go a step further:
change the design to create another flying critter!
