pura belpre
social change through storytelling

Pura Belpre was born in 1899, in Puerto Rico, to a family of storytellers.  She traveled to New York City in 1921 to celebrate her sisters wedding and chose to remain in the United States.  Pura was hired as a bilingual assistant at the 135th Street branch of the New York Public Library in Harlem to find books and create programs to engage the Spanish-speaking community.
She created an outreach program which allowed Spanish-speaking immigrants to feel comfortable at the library, telling stories using puppets and translating folktales into books written in Spanish.
The methods that Pura used to bring the community together through the library has impacted generations and continues to serve as a model for community outreach programs.

we have been learning about remarkable women who are astronauts, doctors, inventors, designers, engineers, chefs, rocket scientsts, artists, actresses, producers...the list goes on.

Using symbols along with bits & bobs related contributions made by the women, you will be testing out another form of print making - CYANOTYPES.  The following video will show you the process.  Use symmetrical, asymetrical and radial balance to create arrangements.  have fun and create a acknowledgement of these remarkable women using the power of the sun.

dorothy liebes
